The bent tree trunk supported by a straight pole is a reoccurring theme used by various orthopaedic surgical societies. It was developed in 1741 by Nicholas André (1658-1742), Professor of Medicine at the University of Paris. It was the emblem on L’Orthopédie; his book on the prevention and correction of musculoskeletal deformities in children. The meaning of the word ‘orthopaedic’ is from two Greek words: orthos, straight and paideia, the rearing of children.

The phoenix is a mythical bird which symbolizes regeneration. When hurt or injured, the bird is able to miraculously heal itself. It was said that the phoenix has the ability to cure and provide immortal life.
